He tells you that you smell nice... (No hidden meaning here - it's a good thing.)

He might act weird around you or seem very nervous. His behavior may just plain change when you're around.

If he's normally quiet, he may get louder, or vice versa. It's the difference in behavior that's the clue.

JJ had raced all his adult but after 30 years he decided to retire to
the West Virginia back country to get away from all the stress.

He gets himself a small place along a secluded river bottom, as far from
humanity as practically possible.

He sees the postman once a week, gets his groceries once a month, and
occasionally sees a passing tourist.

Otherwise it's all total peace and quiet, except an occasional pestering
from a squirrel or a house fly.

After six months or so of almost total isolation, someone knocks on his
door.

He opens it and a huge, bearded man is standing there.

''Name's Jeffy Poo, your neighbor from four miles up the river road. Having a
Christmas party Friday night. Thought you might like to come. About 5:00.'

Great', says JJ, 'After six months out here I'm ready to meet some local
folks.
Thank you.'

As Jeffy Poo is leaving, he stops. 'Gotta warn you, be some drinkin'.'

Not a problem,' says JJ, all my friends from the tracks drank.

Again, the big man starts to leave and stops.

Poor finish drops Gordon from second to sixth in Chase

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Jeff Gordon entered Kansas Speedway second in the standings, just six points off the leader's pace. He left an additional four spots and 114 points away from the title.

Saddled with fuel pump problems, Gordon finished 39th at Kansas Sunday, dropping to sixth in the standings, 120 points off leader Jeff Burton's pace in NASCAR's Chase For The Nextel Cup.

After a pair of third-place finishes in the opening Chase races, the Hendrick Motorsports driver had high expectations entering the race weekend. Now, he says, "We're in the same boat as the rest of those guys back there."

Still, the four-time champion understands his team is far from out of contention. That didn't lessen his frustration Sunday afternoon, though, as he found himself joining teammates Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson in the bottom half of the Chase.

"It is very disappointing," he said. "We know what those other guys feel like at Hendrick Motorsports. We are just going to have to fight really hard. We put [up] a great fight today."

Crew chief Steve Letarte said the engine department would find out what the problem was on Monday, and that the team would move on from there.

"You're not going to tell me I'm out until I'm mathematically out," he said.

Johnson says team just needs some luck

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Jimmie Johnson did everything he could to move up in the NASCAR Nextel Cup standings Sunday, but in the end, a pit road penalty cost him all the ground he'd gained.

Johnson led a race-high 105 laps in the Banquet 400, but he pitted late for fuel - a conservative move the Hendrick Motorsports team made because it is in championship contention - and was assessed a penalty NASCAR officials for speeding on pit road. That dropped him to a 14th-place finish and kept him eighth in the Chase For The Nextel Cup. Johnson is now 165 points behind leader Jeff Burton with seven races remaining in the title-determining segment of the season.

Johnson's problems started when Kasey Kahne spun in front of him as the two were entering pit road. He went back on the race track expecting a caution that didn't come and then returned to pit. At that point he was assessed the pass-through penalty, meaning he had to return to pit road and drive down it at pit-road speed before returning to the race once more.

"I definitely don't feel I was speeding on pit road, but the computer doesn't lie, so we'll just have to see what happens," Johnson said.

Johnson seemed somewhat frustrated by his lack of performance in the Chase. He's finished 13th, 39th and now 14th in the title-determining races.

"We've had the speed the last few weeks," he said. "I know our finishes haven't shown it. We just need some luck to come our way."

LAS VEGAS Mike Skinner raced to his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory of the year Saturday night, passing Ted Musgrave with 20 laps to go and holding on to take the Smith's Las Vegas 350.

Skinner, who started from the pole for the sixth time this year, led 114 laps in the 146-lap, 219-mile race on the reconfigured Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The victory was his first since Sept. 8, 2005, in Richmond.

Musgrave finished second, about three truck-lengths behind Skinner's Toyota. Mike Bliss was third, followed by Johnny Benson and Ron Hornaday.

Series leader Todd Bodine, the Las Vegas winner last year, finished 12th. He has a 91-point lead over Benson with six races left. GO JOHNNY GO PASS PISS ANT UP.

The race was the first since the track changes. The banking in the 1.5-mile track's turns was increased from 12 to 20 degrees. The backstretch is now banked 9 degrees, which is the same as the frontstretch. Pit road also was moved 275 feet closer to the grandstand.

NEW YORK -- Diane Sawyer tried to press singer Clay Aiken on whether or not he is gay, but Aiken said questions like that have become "really rude."

"It's one thing to try to be open and talk to people and try to share as much as I can and, and of course I want to," Aiken told Sawyer on "Good Morning America" Thursday. "But at some point it becomes just really rude, you know?" Aiken clarified that he was not angry with Sawyer over the issue.

"I don't understand why it's any of your business," he told Sawyer. "I don't think you're rude because I figure, you know, people have a job to do."

The 2003 "American Idol" runner-up concluded that the subject was "a waste" of his time.

"I'm not spending my time with this anymore," Aiken said.

Aiken also said on "Good Morning America" that he's been on antidepressants to treat the panic attacks he's had since becoming famous.

The singer's new album, "A Thousand Different Ways," is out this week. The album covers 10 classic love songs and has four original tracks.

Aiken said that he hopes the new album will showcase his grown-up side because he thinks many people view him as a kid.

Meanwhile, Aiken said he has been keeping himself grounded by moving back to his hometown of Raleigh, N.C., where celebrity isn't important.

Gay Groups Fight 'Don't Ask Don't Tell'

Three young men who tried to enlist at a U.S. Army recruiting station here appeared to be first-rate military material.

Two were college students, and the other was a college graduate. They had no criminal records. They were physically fit and eager to serve at a time when wars on two fronts have put a strain on U.S. troops and the need for qualified recruits is great.

But the recruiter was forced to turn them away, for one reason: They are gay and unwilling to conceal it.

"Don't judge me because of my sexuality," said one of the three, Justin Hager, 20, a self-described Republican from a military family who has "a driving desire to join" the armed forces. "Judge me because of my character and drive."

As the Pentagon's search for recruits grows more urgent, gay rights groups are making the biggest push in nearly a decade to win repeal of a compromise policy, encoded in a 1993 law and dubbed "don't ask, don't tell," that bars openly gay people from serving in the military. The policy, grounded in a belief that open homosexuality is damaging to unit morale and cohesion, stipulates that gay men and lesbians must serve in silence and refrain from homosexual activity, and that recruiters and commanders may not ask them about their sexual orientation in the absence of compelling evidence that homosexual acts have occurred.

The push for repeal follows years of legal setbacks, as well as discord among gay rights groups about how, or even whether, to address the issue. Now, rather than rely on the courts, advocates are focusing on drumming up support in towns across the country, spotlighting the personal stories of gay former service members and pushing a Democratic bill in the House that would do away with the policy.

In August the gay rights group Soulforce opened a national campaign by recruiting openly gay people, like the three young men in Madison, who would have enlisted in the military if not for "don't ask, don't tell."

As part of that campaign, two young people who were rejected as applicants on Tuesday at a recruitment center in Chicago returned there on Wednesday and engaged in a sit-in. They were arrested but later released without charges.

The move to change the policy faces stiff resistance from the Pentagon and Republicans in Congress, who, in a time of war during a tough election year, have no longing for another contentious debate about gay troops. The House bill, introduced last year by Representative Martin Meehan, a Massachusetts Democrat, has picked up 119 supporters, but only five of them Republicans.

"In the near term, it has zero chance," said Daniel Goure, a vice president at the centrist Lexington Institute. "It's hard to see how anyone would want to give potential opponents any ammunition to knock them off."

A 2004 report by the Urban Institute concluded that at least 60,000 gay people were serving in the armed forces, including the Reserves and the National Guard. But since 1993, at least 11,000 members have been discharged for being openly gay, among them 800 in highly crucial jobs, according to the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative arm.

For all of that, gay rights groups, gay veterans and some analysts say much has changed since the policy was adopted. A Gallup poll in 2004 found that 63 percent of respondents favored allowing gay troops to serve openly; a similar one, by the Pew Research Center this year, put the number at 60 percent; those majorities did not exist in 1993. Young people in particular now have more tolerant views about homosexuality.

In addition, 24 foreign armies, most notably those of Britain and Israel, have integrated openly gay people into their ranks with little impact on effectiveness and recruitment. In Britain, where the military was initially forced to accept gay troops by the European Court of Human Rights, gay partners are now afforded full benefits, and the Royal Navy has called on a gay rights group to help recruit gay sailors.

The new debate on "don't ask, don't tell" also coincides with multiple deployments that are being required of many U.S. troops by a military that has lowered its standards to allow more high school dropouts and some convicted criminals to enlist.

Lieutenant General Daniel Christman, retired, former superintendent at West Point and onetime assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said both the British experience and the shifts in attitudes at home would cause the U.S. armed forces to change, though slowly.

"It is clear that national attitudes toward this issue have evolved considerably in the last decade," said Christman, now a senior vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "This has been led by a new generation of service members who take a more relaxed and tolerant view toward homosexuality. This does not mean that we will move to a British-like policy of 'don't ask, don't misbehave' any time soon. But I think it is inevitable that the policy will eventually change along the lines of what the British military presently practices."

On the other side of the divide, Elaine Donnelly, president of the conservative Center for Military Readiness, said permitting gay men and lesbians to serve openly would prompt recruitment rates to drop and disrupt unit cohesion, a linchpin in the decision to allow gay troops to serve only in silence.

"People in the military live in conditions of little or no privacy," said Donnelly, who advocates a full ban on gay troops. "In conditions of forced intimacy, people should not have to expose themselves to other persons who are sexually attracted to them."

On 'The SPEED Report,' Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on SPEED, Bob Dillner reported that the winner of the first race in the Chase for the Nextel Cup and his Richard Childress Racing teammate had a performance advantage.

As darkness falls upon New Hampshire International Speedway, we have learned that there was an issue with the winning car of Kevin Harvick and also his teammate, Jeff Burton, in postrace tech.

That issue surrounded the actual rim of the race car. The team apparently manipulated that rim to act as a bleeder valve to release air pressure from that rim. In English, it was a performance advantage for the RCR team.

Now, it was not against anything in the rule book so there won't be any fines or points penalties later on this week, but they have been told not to do it again. So the question is: will it ruin or hurt the performance of the team in the last nine races of the Chase?

Got caught again but since RCR is a NASCAR golden crew nothing was done.

Gordon became a major hurricane when its top sustained winds jumped to 120 mph, up from 110 mph earlier in the day, forecasters said.

The hurricane was moving out to sea and was no threat to land, according to the hurricane center. Gordon's clearly defined eye was centered about 555 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and moving north-northeast near 13 mph.

10 Ways to Improve NASCAR's Chase for the Championshipo

After the 2003 season NASCAR decided to institute a 10 race Chase for the Championship, or playoff system, to determine a champion. This was done to help maintain interest over the long season and make the race for the championship more TV friendly. Now, rumor has it that NASCAR is considering making some "adjustments" to the format. Again, NASCAR is probably trying to garner more attention for the sport and increase TV ratings. So, I have come up with 10 things they can do to play to TV audiences and increase ratings. Here are my suggestions:

1. Make all ten of the chasers live in the same house for the duration of the Chase. It could be called Big Brother NASCAR. Every moment could be filmed with a little confessional room and everything. Imagine Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth living in the same house for 10 weeks. That would be some interseting television.

2. Have the crews prepare the cars as usual but when drivers are called to their cars before the race the chasers will each be assigned to a different car than their usual ride. This would have been even more interesting last year when some young driver like Carl Edwards could have been assigned to the Viagra car. That would put some spring in his backflip.

3. Since ESPN will be coming on board next year they might want to have a spelling bee. Drivers can gain 25 extra points if they correctly spell all their sponsors without looking at their uniforms.

4. 30 minutes prior to the start of a race they could hand each driver a part of his car that has just been removed by a NASCAR official. Tell them they can start the race only after they figure out where the part goes and put it back on.

5. They could hold a beauty pagent among the drivers wives/girlfriends the night before the last race. The winner gets 50 extra points for her man. To make it even more interesting, the FIRST wives of the drivers could be used as judges, or in Jeremy Mayfield's case as the hair dresser.

6. Since it has become a weekly custom for the networks to interview the race winner then interview the most upset drivers after each race so that those drivers can hurl insults and accusations toward the winner, they could have a 'yo momma is so...' contest after each race. The winner, as judged by the TV audience and voted on via the internet, would receive the same number of points as the race winner.

7. Since poker has become so popular among TV audiences they could stop each race with 20 laps to go and have a Texas Hold 'em tournament. The running order could then be reset according to the results of the tournament.

8. Over the 10 weeks of the Chase the chasers could have a singing contest. It could be called NASCAR Idol. Drivers would have to sing in different styles in front of a panel of judges. The judges would be Darrell Waltrip, Larry MacReynolds and Chris Myers, so every song will have to include the words boogety, hisself and I kid because I care. They winner, as determined by internet voting, would receive 25 additional points.

9. The drivers could have to choose a briefcase with a number of points inside. Then, they should have to choose among other briefcases as Mike Helton offers them a 'Deal or No Deal' for the briefcases. Each driver gets the additional number of points he winds up with from the number in his briefcase at the end of the game.

10. At the end of each race they could have the drivers face Donald Trump, who would evaluate their performance in that race and pronounce them as "fired" if they were not good enough. However, Mr. Trump would probably soon leave the game when he realized that the drivers have better planes, helicopters and women than he has.
